As with any computer choice, the decision on which machine to go with depends on a number of factors. The three main ones are:
1) What do you want to be able to do with your computer?
2) What software do you already know and are familiar with?
3) How much budget do you have?
If you are already a Windows user and comfortable in the Windows world, then I would recommend a Windows based machine. All of your usual software such as MS Word, Outlook, IE should work on it. If you are comfortable with Linux and familiar with open source software then you should look at the Linux netbooks.
One thing to be aware of with ultra portables is that they divide into two categories based on the type of disk storage used. Several machines have solid state drives which cut down on power consumption and weight.
A possible drawback with the solid state drives is they tend to have a smaller storage capacity than the machines with a regular hard drive. If you feel that you need a large storage capacity due to working with lots of data (such as graphics and huge spreadsheets) then go with an ultra portable having a regular hard drive. If your concern is weight and power consumption, go with a solid state drive configuration.
